June is Youth Month in South Africa

June is Youth Month in South Africa - however, many children and teenagers are still not living in an environment where they can grow up feeling safe. The Birth to Twenty Plus study found that 99% of children had witnessed some form of violence, and more than 40% had multiple experiences of violence in their homes, schools and communities bit.ly/2Wlweqw. Nearly 500 fatal child abuse cases are reported yearly in South Africa with deaths most likely to occur in children under the age of five. Violence in schools is a widespread problem that is fuelled by a culture of violence in society, including using physical violence as a punishment. This is harmful to children, but also teaches them violence and often leads to more severe forms of abuse. The Thoughtful Path's programmes help to protect the rights of children in Munsieville - we encourage everyone in the community to take responsibility by playing an active role in speaking out and protecting children.
